Description:
A rectangular rug that is meant to hang off the wall. The background is brown, and in the center of the piece is a ship made with dark blue yarn. It has a few stains on the sides of the rug, but these stains have no connection to the story connected to this object.
Story:
This piece is a rug hooking project my grandmother made for my grandfather, Patricia. The rug hooking kit originally came with a light blue background around a dark blue ship. She finished the original project in the 1970s, but my grandmother did not like the way it looked. During the 1990s, she removed the light blue and asked my great-grandfather, Patricia, to help add a brown background to the rug hooking instead of the light blue.
My Mothers Point of View:
When I asked my grandma about this rug hooking project, my mom was in the room and remembered a lot about the project as well. She remembered how much my grandpa loved crafting as well, and how he created a ship in a bottle. This object connects back to the tapestry and the ship theme that my grandpa loved so much.
My Grandmothers Point of View:
When my grandma thinks back to the rug, she says she was a fussy old lady because she wanted to change the colour to brown, but to me, it shows the care she put into what she made for those she loved. She later said the reason she wanted to change it was so it would fit better into their new house. My grandma finished the original light blue and dark blue piece in 1975, but around the 1990s, she pulled it all out and got great-grandpa Patricia to add the brown to the project. Grandma remembers him being happy to do it. It gave him something to do, and he did not have to pay for the yarn. She made this tapestry for my grandpa because she knew he loved ships, and she wanted to create something special for him. She remembers him loving her gift; he appreciated any handmade gift and understood the effort that went into making them.
