A grey, blue, and white knitted cardigan with a hand-designed tapestry knitting pattern on the back. There is a Toronto Blue Jays logo on the right sleeve and my brother's last name, which has been covered by a piece of folded paper, and the number 76, his baseball number.
Story:
The item was hand-knit by my mom for my brother when he was a child. This was the first tapestry knitting design she worked on, and she customized it with my brother's favourite baseball team, my brother's last name and ball number on the back of the sweater. To this day, my brother has kept it and plans to keep it, even though it no longer fits him.
My Mothers Point of View:
When my mother made this sweater for my brother, she was also making one for me. Her goal was to create a sweater for each of her kids. She thought that personalizing my brother's sweater to his interests would appeal to him, as he was not very expressive. To create the sweater, she adapted the Toronto Blue Jays logo for knitting. It was her first experience designing colour work. She enjoyed the process of making the sweater. She used simple stitches she already knew for my sweater, and for this sweater, she experimented with colourwork, a new skill she had never attempted before. She enjoyed switching between the two. Her only complaint was that he never wore it because it was too hot.
My Brothers Point of View:
He was very excited because he did not get a lot of merch from his favourite baseball team, the Toronto Blue Jays. It also had a sentimental value because it was handmade for him. He appreciated the care and love that were in the gift. Reflecting on the time he received the gift, he recalls being overjoyed, feeling seen and loved. My mom wishes he had worn the sweater, but he just ran too hot for such a warm sweater. Even if the sweater was not so warm, he still feels like he would not wear it. It means so much to him that he wants to frame and keep it as it is, so he can remember how he felt when he received it and protect it. One story came to mind when thinking about the sweater, and it was the time he wore the sweater while watching a Blue Jays opening game. He thinks back to those times and this gift fondly.
